This is a brake hydraulic / mechanical brake calliper

BACK BRAKE ISSUES

Warning !!!

If you try to remove the four bolts that hold the rear brake discs to the hubs, you will probably shear the bolts off flush with the hub because they are all held in with Loctite, I sheared all 4 on one side and one bolt on the other, the problem is that you cant get the remains of the bolt out, I drilled the bolt remains with the correct size drill and used the correct Easyout, but still they would not come out, the Loctite does a really good job.

In the end I drilled them out to the tapping size of 5mm and tapped them out to 6mm to fit the existing 6mm bolts

So, the message is, don,t take the rear brake disc attachment bolts out unless you REALLY have to.

The existing brake callipers seem man enough for the job but I must say their attachment isn’t, it looks to me like, if you slammed the back brake on in an emergency all four bolts that hold the callipers on, could, shear because the distance between where they are anchored to the axle and the calliper looks to big a dimension to me.

Before someone tries to sue me for making this statement let me say am not an automotive design engineer but I am an Aircraft Engineer who has been Head of an Aircraft Modification design organisation so I know a bit about structural design needs.

So how am I going to fix this problem?

My initial thoughts are to bolt a block to the back axle where the calliper attachment bolts are with 4 bolts (not 2 as per original design) making a sound attachment for the calliper to the block and then bolt the calliper to the block, well that’s the theory, lets see how it goes.

If anybody has other ideas on reinforcing the existing brakes then let me know and I will publicise them on this site.

I would suggest that before you design any thing to bolt the callipers on more effectively you decide on the handbrake design, see the handbrake pages on this website (click here for the link)
